Custom Scout Rifle Package - .22 Rimfire

Savage Scout Rifle, Left Side, Left Handed

Detail photos below

Scout Rifle

We've become somewhat opinionated on what makes a good Scout. It's experience that teaches what works and what doesn't. A Scout rifle isn't easy to build, and they aren't inexpensive either. You also won't see gadgets on our rifles - just caring, meticulous attention to detail, the finest components available to us, and an overall unbeatable combination of performance and appearance.

Action

Acceptable actions to date have been the Remington, Winchester (Pre-64 & Classic), Interarms, Kimber, Ruger, '03 Springfield, and the ZKK. Most scouts up to now have been built on short-action receivers, mainly in 308, while we are getting more and more requests for larger calibers up to, and including, the venerable .458 Lott.

Barrel

Our Scout barrels are custom made for us by Danny Pedersen at Classic Barrel & Gun Works. They are all cut-rifled on either a chrome-moly or stainless steel blank that has been cryogenically treated. Scout barrels are typically shorter and lighter than your average bolt rifle. A short barrel will sacrifice some velocity but not enough to outweigh its practical considerations.

Stock

Light weight is as important in a scout as any other consideration, so we use synthetic rather than wood stocks...a decent piece of wood is terribly expensive as well as being subject to the ravages of temperature and humidity.

We have composite stocks available in either fiberglass or Kevlar/carbon fiber. These stocks, when finished properly, will be stronger, lighter and less expensive than a wood stock. It can also be very attractive with the proper finish applied to it. If you do happen to damage it on a hunt, it will also be much easier for us to repair it.

We will fully bed the entire receiver and a small pad at the back of the barrel, including pillars, if desired. The barrel will be completely free-floated and the barrel channel will be painted to match the rest of the stock.

A Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad will be fit to the stock prior to finishing.

A "Ching" sling is attached to the stock using three Pachmayr flush-mounted sling swivels and sockets. This sling provides very quick "sling-up" and a rock-solid shooting platform.

The "Scout" Scope

For those of you who have not tried it, you are missing out. You may now shoot your scoped rifle with both eyes open. With the included 2.5x Leupold IER Scout scope, your dominant eye can see the target through the scope while the other eye remains on the landscape to facilitate a quicker follow-up shot if necessary.

The scope is mounted very low over the front of the receiver (.030" to .050" clearance) so that the rear of the scope is mounted at the front of the loading/ejection port. This provides not only the proper eye relief, but the opportunity for excellent cheek weld. There is never any interference between the scope and the bolt (or your hand) when chambering a round.

Unlike other "Scout" rifles you may have seen, ours have a provision for mounting the scope directly to the barrel without gluing, screwing, or soldering any to it. The scope bases are machined directly from the parent barrel material as part of the construction process. Integral stops are provided at the front of the bases for the scope rings to seat against during recoil. There are other, less-expensive ways to do it, but not better.

Iron Sights

Back-up iron sights (BUIS) are almost a given on a Scout rifle. The rear sight is typically mounted on the bridge of the receiver, and is adjustable for windage. The front sight can be mounted as far forward as the muzzle, or as far back as the front scope mount pedestal. The front sight height is regulated for height base on the customer's desired load and estimated target range, prior to delivery.
