Grizzly Custom Guns Scout Rifle
Scout Rifle.
The words bring an inspired rush of ideas and reflections on the origins and development of the piece. Involved not from the beginning, but certainly during the developmental stages of the Scout, Ted Yost likely can claim having built the largest number of custom Scouts. In several evolving editions during the 90's, several things became clear from a builder's perspective, as well as that of the shooter.
While accuracy and reliability are of primary importance, durability is equally critical. The small Sako actions, while allowing us to achieve Cooper's desired weight specification of 3 kilos, were lacking in the area of durability. We struggled to continue to "make weight" using other actions after the Sakos were no longer imported, but the only viable solution was to use thinner, lighter contour barrels. Accuracy suffered, as might be predicted.
This was about the time we began to question the parameters. Ted, being the smartass that he is, asked if he could have the stone tablets containing the Scout specs faxed to him. In examining the comments and evaluations from the existing owners, a couple of ideas were prevalent. First was weight - it was suggested that a little more weight might actually be preferred. Second was the almost universal opinion that the bipods and butt cartridge magazines had proven themselves to be more trouble than they were worth. Breakages were common, and the flimsy nature of the bipods offered little stability.
Fortunately, this timeframe saw the introduction of the Winchester Classic action, in long and short configurations. A little heavier, but containing all the features we'd desired for years. This became our new standard, and remains the most popular choice for a custom Scout today. With a medium taper pedestal barrel, our finished weight has come up a little from the original specification, but the benefits are seen in longer barrel life, better accuracy, and less perceived recoil.
We've become a little opinionated on what makes a good Scout. It's experience, hard earned, that teaches what works and what doesn't. A Scout isn't an easy piece to build, and they aren't cheap either. You won't see flimsy, fragile gadgets on our rifles - just caring, meticulous attention to detail, the finest components available to us, and an overall combination of appearance and performance that reaffirms your choice.
While Ted is no longer involved in these Scouts, his influence and guidance have proved invaluable in the final product, as many a customer testimony will attest.
